Melanie Reyes Receives Certification in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization

AUSTIN (January 28, 2015) ¬¬− Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS) announced Melanie S. Reyes received Board Certification in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law. Reyes currently practices in Tyler, Texas where she is part of Flowers Davis, PLLC; her primary area of practice is Oil and Gas Title Law.

Board Certification is a voluntary designation program certifying Texas attorneys in 21 specific areas of law. Board Certified attorneys must be licensed for at least five years, devote a required percentage of practice to a specialty area for at least three years, attend continuing education seminars, pass an evaluation by fellow lawyers and judges and pass a 6-hour written examination. Of the 52 attorneys who sat for the Oil, Gas and Mineral Law exam in 2014, only 34 (65.38%) passed the exam.

“An attorney has to do something extra to get certified and then they have to continue to work and acquire knowledge in their specialty area to remain certified. You could say it is a life-long commitment,” said R. Hal Moorman, Chairman of the TBLS Board of Directors.

Reyes is a 2002 graduate of the University of Tulsa College of Law and was licensed by the State Bar of Texas in 2003. She has been a part of Flowers Davis law firm since 2004. Reyes is the third Flowers Davis attorney to become Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law, joining Partner Celia C. Flowers and Attorney Tom Buchanan.

Initial Board Certification is valid for five years. To remain certified, attorneys and paralegals must apply for recertification every five years and meet substantial involvement, peer review and continuing legal education requirements for their specialty area.
