The Texas Bar College Welcomes New Member Catherine Chesley Goodgion

May 1, 2017 by Janna Fain

AUSTIN (May 1, 2017) – The Texas Bar College congratulates Flowers Davis PLLC Attorney Catherine Chesley Goodgion on her membership as a Fellow in the College of the State Bar of Texas. The Texas Bar College is an honorary society of lawyers who are among the best trained attorneys in Texas, having completed at least double the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) required by the State Bar of Texas.

Goodgion is a Patent Prosecutor, licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). To qualify as a Patent Prosecutor, an attorney must meet legal, scientific and technical qualifications and demonstrate a good moral character and reputation. In addition to earning a technical science degree and a law degree, they must apply for registration with the USPTO and pass a separate bar examination. Fewer than 1% of the attorneys in Smith County have met these requirements.

Goodgion also practices in the areas of Real Estate Transactions, Acquisitions & Development, Estate Planning, Document Preparation and Curative.

The Texas Bar College, the only organization in the United States formed for this purpose,  is an honorary society of lawyers, chartered by the Supreme Court of Texas in 1981, to recognize and encourage lawyers who maintain and enhance their professional skills and the quality of their service to the public by completing at least double the required hours of continuing legal education each year.  The College also sponsors or otherwise assists in educational activities of significant merit and widespread relevance and applicability to the legal profession.

Catherine Chesley Goodgion Earns Patent Prosecutor Registration with U. S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

August 23, 2016 by Janna Fain

TYLER, TX (August 23, 2016) – Flowers Davis PLLC announces Catherine Chesley Goodgion has been granted registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Goodgion currently practices in Tyler, Texas where her primary areas of practice are Intellectual Property, Real Estate Transactions, Acquisitions & Development, Document Preparation and Curative.

Registration as a Patent Prosecutor with the USPTO is open only to attorneys with technical science degrees who make application before the USPTO. These attorneys must pass a separate bar exam and demonstrate high moral ethics before earning the right to practice as Patent Prosecutors. Fewer than 1% of the attorneys in Smith County have met these qualifications.

Patent Prosecutors are different from Patent Litigators, in that Prosecutors represent clients in obtaining patents with the USPTO and Litigators defend clients against copyright, trademark or patent infringement. Patent Prosecutors research the viability of a patent on a specific invention, design, process, or trade secret, represent the client in applying for a patent, and negotiate or respond to USPTO requests until the patent is granted.

Flowers Davis attorneys Steve Mason, Preston Smith and Melanie Reyes are Patent Litigators with extensive experience serving as local and trial counsel for numerous infringement cases pending before the United States Court for the Eastern District of Texas and each of its divisions. Ms. Goodgion’s status as Patent Prosecutor solidifies Flowers Davis’ position as a full-service Intellectual Property law firm.

Goodgion is a 2011 graduate of St. Mary’s University School of Law and was licensed by the State Bar of Texas in 2012. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1999 from Baylor University, and earned a Masters of Business Administration Degree from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2003. She has been practicing attorney at Flowers Davis since being admitted to the Bar, and worked as an Independent Petroleum Landman for the firm in prior years. Goodgion’s experience and education in the pharmaceutical, medical, and oil and gas fields brings a business person’s perspective to her legal work. Goodgion will continue to serve her real estate, business and energy clients.
